In 2025, a record number of journalists and media workers were killed in the course of their work in one year. According to research by the New York-based independent organization Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), two-thirds of the 129 media workers killed were the Israeli military.
According to the report, 86 journalists, most of them Palestinians, were killed by Israeli fire in Gaza in 2025, but also included 31 media workers killed in an attack on a Houthi news center in Yemen.
The Israeli military did not comment on this report. Earlier, however, the Israeli side insisted that its forces in Gaza target only fighters, but operations in the combat zone itself contain risks. Israel also admitted that it attacked a media center in Yemen in September, describing it as a propaganda center for the Houthi movement.
International news organizations deny that the killed journalists had any connection with armed groups.
In addition to Gaza and Yemen, the most dangerous countries for journalists are: Sudan – 9 cases of deaths of media workers, Mexico – 6, Ukraine – 4, Philippines – 3 cases.
