A Greek court has sentenced four people, including two Israelis, to 8 years in prison for wiretapping, ending the investigation into the scandalous case that led to the resignation of several members of the government in 2022 and the impeachment process in parliament.
According to the preliminary investigation, dubbed “Greek Watergate”, it was confirmed that the accused used the Predator program to intercept the phones of more than 90 politicians, journalists, businessmen and high-ranking military personnel between 2020 and 2022.
The scandalous case was opened in early 2022, when the Greek investigative journalist Thanasis Koukakis discovered that the intelligence services had eavesdropped on him using the Predator program, which allows him to hack into mobile phones, read other people’s messages and even remotely activate the microphone and camera.
Now, according to the decision of the Athens court, the managers of the company that introduced this program to Greece have been convicted. Among the officials who resigned after the scandal was the head of the Hellenic Intelligence Service.
