The issues of the Gyumri-Akhurik-Turkey and Yeraskh-Nakhijevan railways were discussed with the Russian side

Issues related to the restoration and construction of Gyumri-Akhurik-Turkey border and Yeraskh-Nakhijevan railway infrastructure were discussed with the Russian side, the Ministry of Territorial Administration reports.

It is noted that Deputy Minister Armen Simonyan received the delegation led by Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Dmitry Zverev.

There are not many details from the discussion. They also inform that
the current level of cooperation in the fields of road transport and air transportation was touched upon.

The “South Caucasian Railway” operating in Armenia has been managing the Russian railway on a fiduciary basis since 2008 for a period of 30 years. There is a possibility to extend the administration for another 10 years.

But before the end of the contract, Yerevan started talking about transferring the fiduciary management to another country.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently spoke about the possibility of another country acquiring the right to manage the railway. Pashinyan stressed that any country friendly to Armenia and Russia can gain control, giving the names of Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk informed that Russia responded positively to Prime Minister Pashinyan’s proposal and decided to start substantive negotiations with Armenia to restore the railway in Yeraskh and Akhurik sections.
