John Bolton: Trump’s plan to overthrow the regime in Iran

However, Bolton raises a critical question about the intentions of the American president: is Trump really serious about what he defined as a “noble mission”, or is this a limited attack designed to allow him to declare a quick victory and retreat? The obstacles in the way are many, starting from certain opposition from Russia and China, through anger among the liberal left in the West, and up to internal opposition from the separatists in the US. On the other hand, he points out, the center-left governments in Canada and Australia have already rushed to express support.

In order to succeed in the process, Bolton emphasizes, the US must take advantage of these divisions and coordinate its actions with the Iranian resistance. Trump’s promise to grant immunity to military and Revolutionary Guards personnel who lay down their weapons is a critical step. Opponents of the regime must locate commanders, and even senior clerics, who will be willing to abandon the sinking ship and defect to the winning side.

The most likely scenario after the collapse of the regime, Bolton writes in the “Telegraph”, is the establishment of a transitional military-secular government whose role will be to restore order after a struggle that is expected to be bloody. Although there is no guarantee of success, Bolton concludes that any new government that is formed will be better for the Iranian people and the entire world than the current regime that is crumbling before our eyes.
