Trump: “The new leadership of Iran asked me to talk and I agreed”

On the second day of Operation Epic Fury, US President Donald Trump told The Atlantic that Iran’s new leadership “wants to talk to him.”

“They want to talk, and I agreed, so I will talk to them. They should have done this earlier. They should have done something much earlier that was very practical and easy to do. They waited too long,” Trump told journalist Michael Scherer.

Asked whether the conversation with the Iranians would take place today or tomorrow, Trump replied: “I can’t tell you that.” At the same time, he noted that some of the participants in recent negotiations on the Iranian side are already dead.

Note that the new Supreme Leader of Iran has not yet been elected. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told Qatar’s Al Jazeera television channel on March 1 that a successor to the supreme leader might be chosen “in a day or two.”
