European Union foreign ministers at an emergency meeting on the war in Iran

At the end of the discussion, the leadership of the Union issued a joint statement calling for “maximum restraint” on the part of all parties involved, and full adherence to international law and humanitarian law. The announcement emphasized the need to protect civilians, avoid damage to civilian infrastructure and act to prevent further escalation.

In Europe, developments in the Middle East are followed with concern, both due to the security implications and due to the possible impact on global economic and energy stability.

During the discussion, the concern about damage to shipping lanes and energy supply in the Persian Gulf was also raised, primarily the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route through which a significant part of the world’s oil supply passes. The Union warned that any disruption in the region could have broad economic consequences for Europe as well.

Consular aspects were also discussed at the meeting, chief among them possible coordination in assisting the citizens of the EU countries staying in the risk areas, against the background of flight disruptions and airspace closures.

At the conclusion of the discussion, the European Union reiterated its commitment to act in a multilateral framework, in cooperation with international parties, in order to curb the escalation and restore stability to the region. However, at this stage no new operative measures have been announced, and the Union is content for the time being with a firm political message of restraint, responsibility and respect for international law.
