Middle East: what is the outcome of Iranian reprisals against several countries in the region on the second day of the conflict?

The Middle East is on fire. After the attack launched jointly by Israel and its American ally against the Iranian regime, Tehran did not wait to respond by targeting military bases but also civilians throughout the region.

In Israel, nine people were killed, 46 injured and 11 others missing after an Iranian strike in Bet Shemesh. On Saturday, a Filipino care worker was killed in a strike on Tel Aviv which also injured 21 people. On Sunday evening, Iran attacked Jerusalem once again, causing injuries according to emergency services.

Four dead in Gulf countries

In the Gulf countries, there are at least four deaths and dozens of injuries. AFP journalists heard new explosions on Sunday in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Doha in Qatar, Manama, capital of Bahrain, as well as Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Oman, mediator in the negotiations resumed at the beginning of February between Iran and the United States, was targeted for the first time on Sunday: a drone attack left one person injured at a port, while an oil tanker was targeted off its coast.

Three Pakistani, Nepalese and Bangladeshi nationals have been killed in the United Arab Emirates, and 58 people have been injured since the Iranian attacks began, the Defense Ministry said. He also said that 165 ballistic missiles had been detected, of which 152 were destroyed, as well as two cruise missiles. In addition, “541 Iranian drones were detected, including 506 intercepted and destroyed,” the ministry added.

In Kuwait, the strikes killed one person and injured 32, “all of foreign nationalities,” said the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Abdullah al-Sanad, without further details.

The army reported on Saturday that three soldiers were injured in a missile attack targeting the Ali Al-Salem air base, hosting American personnel and other foreigners, notably Italians.

Injured in Qatar, Oman and Syria

In Qatar, home to the region’s largest U.S. military base, officials said Iran fired 65 missiles and 12 drones toward the Gulf state, most of which were intercepted, but eight people were injured, one seriously.

The port of Duqm, in Oman, suffered an attack by two drones on Sunday morning which injured a worker, according to the Omani press agency, citing a “security source”. According to the same agency, an oil tanker flying the flag of Palau was targeted and four crew members were injured off the coast of the country. The entire crew was evacuated.

The Omani foreign minister, who had mediated talks between the United States and Iran, called for a ceasefire on Sunday during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart.

In Syria, four people were injured due to Israel’s interception of an Iranian missile. A man and his three daughters were hit in Ain Tarma, near Damascus.

Targeted hotels and airports

Civilian infrastructure – airports, seaports, residential buildings and hotels – have also been affected. Bahrain’s international airport was targeted by a drone, causing material damage but no deaths, according to authorities.

The U.S. Embassy in Manama on Sunday urged Americans to avoid hotels in Bahrain’s capital, warning they could become potential targets after the Crowne Plaza was hit by strikes.

At Abu Dhabi airport, an Asian national was killed and seven people injured in an “incident”, according to the organization that manages the airport. Dubai airport, one of the busiest in the world, as well as that of Kuwait, were also affected. In the United Arab Emirates, which bore the brunt of the attacks, two people were injured when debris from intercepted drones fell on homes in Dubai, authorities said.

On Saturday, Iranian attacks caused fires at iconic locations, such as the artificial island The Palm and the luxury Burj Al Arab hotel, in Dubai, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates.

In Saudi Arabia, Iranian missiles targeting Riyadh international airport and Prince Sultan air base, which houses American soldiers, were intercepted, a Gulf source familiar with the matter told AFP.
