France is reducing its force deployment in Northern Europe

The decision to divert the flagship of the French Navy, the only nuclear-powered vessel of its kind in the world outside of the US Navy, is causing many repercussions. Until recently, the aircraft carrier and its entourage were in the Baltic Sea as part of a European show of force that included, among other things, a historic diplomatic visit to Sweden and intensive operational activity. Now, the French military’s priorities seem to have shifted sharply, turning their attention to the south.

According to the BFMTV report, the attack group – which includes dozens of advanced ‘Raphael’ fighter jets, early warning aircraft, a submarine and defense frigates – was ordered to change course immediately. Although the official reason for the shortening of the deployment in the north has not yet been fully announced, the powerful shift of forces to the Middle East clearly signals the intention of Paris to demonstrate a strong presence, protect its strategic interests and keep a watchful eye on the developments in the explosive region. The “Charles de Gaulle”, operated by over two thousand crew members, is a central pillar of the French power projection capability, and its rapid passage highlights the tense security reality around the world.
