Shakira gives a free concert in Mexico in front of 400,000 people

Pop star Shakira gave a free concert in front of 400,000 spectators in Mexico City – setting a new record. “This is a dream. How poetic to see this place so full of people,” said the 49-year-old in Zócalo Square, the largest square in the Mexican capital, surrounded by the illuminated cathedral and the National Palace. It was her second appearance there after 2007.

For the mega show at the Zócalo on Monday night (local time), many people came hours before it started to secure a good spot. The outdoor concert was the first large gathering of hundreds of thousands of people in Mexico since unrest sparked in other parts of the country by the military’s killing of a powerful drug lord a week ago. It passed without incident.

“Show full of magic and incredible energy”

“Our hearts are still beating faster from what we experienced last night!” wrote the mayor of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, on the platform X on Monday. The square in the historic center of Mexico City was “full of magic, music and incredible energy” thanks to Shakira.

The Colombian had previously achieved another record in Mexico. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer was on stage at the Estadio GNP for the 13th and final time on her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” tour on Friday – more times than any other artist before. In total it sold around 800,000 tickets.

Another milestone awaits the pop star on May 2nd. She will give a free concert on the legendary Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. Last year around 2.5 million people came to Lady Gaga’s performance.
