Francken confirms that the first repatriation flight will take place on Friday: “About 100 Belgians will leave today and there will also be flights in the coming days”

On Friday morning it was reported that our country had failed to obtain the necessary permission to fly over Egypt and the first repatriation flight of Belgians in the Middle East had to be postponed by at least one day. Not much later, Defense Minister Theo Francken (N-VA) denied the postponement and confirmed that the first flight could indeed take place on Friday evening. “I don’t know what went wrong, but this certainly did not come from my staff.”

Good news for the stranded Belgians, some of whom had already left Dubai for Oman by bus on Friday morning, where a military plane will pick them up on Friday evening. “About 100 Belgians can leave on Friday, and there will also be flights in the coming days,” Francken said. “One every day, for the next eight days and longer if necessary.”

From Oman, the plane will first stop in Hurghada, Egypt and then fly on to Belgium. “We will do everything we can to get all Belgian tourists back home,” Francken said. “It has been a very tough week for them. I look forward to welcoming them with open arms to Zaventem and Melsbroek.”
