Kuwait considers continuing to supply crude oil to Vietnam

In a phone call on the afternoon of March 9 with Kuwait Prime Minister Ahmed Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed deep concern over the current conflict developments in the Middle East, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Prime Minister called on Kuwait and related countries to exercise restraint and promote efforts to reduce tensions and seek peaceful solutions for the region on the basis of respect for international law, the United Nations Charter and ensuring the legitimate rights of all parties. Vietnam is ready to actively contribute to this process.

The Prime Minister requested the Kuwait government to continue to support security and safety for Vietnamese citizens in Kuwait, and create favorable conditions for evacuation activities of Vietnamese citizens.

The Kuwaiti Prime Minister highly appreciated Vietnam’s role, goodwill and responsibility in contributing to finding a peaceful solution in the Middle East. He pledged to coordinate to ensure the safety of Vietnamese citizens in Kuwait and create conditions for evacuation if necessary.

The Kuwaiti Prime Minister agreed to coordinate with relevant partners to consider continuing to supply crude oil to Vietnam, and agreed to promote energy cooperation between the two countries in the coming time.

Vietnam and Kuwait established diplomatic relations on January 10, 1976. The two countries upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership, agreeing on many directions for developing relations, during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to Kuwait in November 2025.

During the visit, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received CEO of Kuwait National Petroleum Corporation (KPC) Nawaf S. Al-Sabah, proposing that KPC consider and cooperate in building a bonded petroleum warehouse in Vietnam. Thereby, Kuwait has an additional strategic area in petroleum reserves, while strengthening the friendly relationship between the two countries.

According to data from the General Department of Customs, two-way trade turnover in 2025 will reach 6.43 billion USD. In particular, Vietnam has a trade deficit, mainly crude oil and liquefied gas, exporting to Kuwait items such as seafood, vegetables, cashew nuts, pepper, wood, spare parts, components…

Kuwait is currently Vietnam’s largest trade and investment partner among the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Kuwait’s largest investment project in Vietnam is Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Complex with a total investment of 9 billion USD. Currently, there are a number of local cooperation agreements between the two countries such as Ho Chi Minh City and Ahmadi province, Thanh Hoa province and Al Farwaniyah province.
