The Spanish government decided to recall the ambassador from Israel and reduce the level of relations. The diplomatic mission will be headed by the charge d’affaires.
“At the proposal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation and after discussing the issue on March 10 by the Council of Ministers, I have decided to end the tenure of Ms. Ana Maria Salomon Perez as Ambassador to the State of Israel,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said.
Spain is one of the most hostile European states to Israel. The government accuses the Jewish state of “genocide” of the inhabitants of Gaza, and calls the US-Israeli strike on Iran aggression. In connection with the latter, US President Donald Trump threatened Madrid with a severance of economic relations.
However, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez told reporters that both the Spanish Embassy in Washington and the American Embassy in Madrid continue to operate as normal.
