Snakes wake up from their winter sleep: ‘The adder is the most poisonous snake in Europe, and they are active at night’

She explained that one should be careful in nature, especially when picking asparagus, so as not to accidentally “pick” a snake. Recently, one of our readers filmed as many as five vipers warming themselves on a stone in Gorski kotar.

– Već I have been observing them for twenty years around the village. They have always been around those rocks. I’m not afraid of them – he said and added that you should always be careful with snakes.

Experts explained to us that there are now more snakes in nature due to their coming out of winter sleep.

– It is not their mating season, it is around the middle of May. They hibernate and now, after the arrival of the sun, they come out and feed, and behave normally. I saw videos on social networks, that’s normal – Darko Karamazan, president of the Zmijolovac Association, explained to us.

He explained that there is nothing strange when there are more of them in one place because they probably overwintered together.

– Their mating season depends on the warmth of the weather, that is, when they came out. If you see jumps, you should bypass them. Don’t touch them, don’t try to be brave. If it is in the yard, call 112 and they call another service that deals with it. They will catch him and return him to nature, to a place where neither man nor snake is threatened. That is the best solution. Everything else is a game with danger – said Karamazan.

The director of the City of Zagreb Zoo, Ivan Cizelj, explained to us that the viper is the most poisonous snake in Europe.

– For a person, a dose of 25 to 40 milligrams of poison is fatal. The young also have venom and can deliver a dangerous bite. The viper’s venom works by coagulating the blood and causing shock in the victim. The viper is mostly active at night, when it hunts. It hunts by killing its prey with poison and then swallowing it whole. He often climbs trees, from where he catches birds. He spends his days resting and digesting food. In colder regions, it hibernates in winter – said Cizelj.

The viper, he said, can grow from 65 to 90 centimeters in length. The color of their body is from gray, tan to gray with a zigzag stripe down the middle of the back, as all Croatian venomous snakes have.

They have a triangular shape flat head and roščić on the tip of the muzzle, by which they are recognizable. 
