The IAEA confirms the destruction of a structure near the reactor of the Iranian nuclear power plant in Bushehr

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed the destruction of a structure near the reactor of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, on the southern coast of Iran, due to an attack within the framework of the offensive by the United States and Israel, although there are no reports of damage to the plant or injuries from the incident.

The director general of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, has indicated that the structure was 350 meters from the reactor, although he has not given more details. “Any attack on nuclear facilities or in their vicinity violates the seven essential pillars related to nuclear security guarantees during an armed conflict and should never take place,” he said on social networks.

The attack was denounced the day before by both Iran and Russia, since the plant is jointly operated by both countries. The director of the Russian nuclear operator Rosatom, Alexei Lijachev, previously warned that this nuclear facility was “under threat” at the beginning of the war in the Middle East, when he urged the parties to “protect the facilities.”

In its latest balance, Iran has confirmed more than 1,200 deaths due to the offensive by Israel and the United States, although the non-governmental organization Human Rights Activists in Iran, based in the United States, raised the death toll on Sunday to more than 3,000, mostly civilians.

Among those killed in these attacks are the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as several senior officials of the Army and security forces, including the commander of the Basij paramilitary force, Golamreza Soleimani, who also died on March 16. His death was confirmed on Tuesday by Iranian authorities after Israel announced his assassination.
