Aerial train of butchers: the logistical operation to save the meat market for Passover

In the kosher world, the days before Passover are “peak time”. Thousands of tons of fancy beef are transported from the largest slaughterhouses in the world to the marketing chains in Israel, to meet the huge demand of hundreds of thousands of families. But this year, the war in Israel and the severe upheavals in the international aviation industry turned the logistical routine into a dramatic rescue operation worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

At the heart of the event were more than 100 slaughtering staff members of the “Yora Dea” slaughterhouse, deployed in five countries in South America: Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and Chile. As the planned return date approached, the scale of the crisis became clear: commercial flights were canceled one after the other, and the fear that dozens of slaughterers and supervisors would remain “stuck” abroad during the holiday became tangible.

The decision was brought to the attention of the head of the kashrut system and a member of the Council of Torah Sages, Rabbi Shlomo Machfod Shalita. In an unusual step, the rabbi ordered not to compromise on any of the values: “The responsibility is to return each and every one to his home on time, without harming the supply of meat and without passing on the costs to the public.”

During the operation, whose cost is estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars, the teams were housed in hotels near the airport in Spain until the arrival of the last butchers from the farthest points. In a move of sectoral solidarity, Rabbi Mahfoud ordered that if there are any vacant seats left on the leased plane, priority will be given to kosher members of competing rabbis who are also stuck abroad.

If there are no last-minute delays, the special plane is expected to land in Israel in the next few hours, on the eve of Rosh Chodesh Nissan. For the people of “Yora Dea”, this operation is more than a logistical solution – it is a statement of intent that even in times of war and crisis, concern for the worker and the consumer is a top priority.
