Axios: US considering blockade of Kharg Island

The United States is considering the possibility of an attack on Iran’s oil hub – Kharg Island, as well as the possibility of blockade or capture of it in order to put pressure on Tehran. This was reported by Axios, citing anonymous sources.

According to the publication, the Donald Trump administration is discussing a scenario in which Iran will be weakened by massive airstrikes for about a month, after which the United States will be able to establish control over the island and use this as leverage in negotiations.

The White House stated that the US military is capable of “destroying” Kharg Island at any time on the orders of the president. As White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly emphasized, the administration prepared in advance for possible actions from Iran.

Kharg Island, through which the bulk of Iran’s oil exports pass, remains one of the key US targets amid the war with Iran and the crisis over the Strait of Hormuz. The American attack on the island became one of the most significant episodes of the current military campaign.
