Iran confirmed that the general in charge of the Hormuz blockade was killed

Iran confirmed that Rear Admiral Tangsiri, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy and the person in charge of blocking the Strait of Hormuz, was killed.

News page Sepah News of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) today said that Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri “died due to serious injuries in an attack”, but did not state the circumstances that led to his injury.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on March 26 that the country’s military killed Rear Admiral Tangsiri and a number of senior commanders of the Iranian navy in a “precise and effective attack”.

Central Command (CENTCOM), the agency in charge of US military operations in the Middle East, later also confirmed that Mr. Tangsiri was killed.

Al Jazeera channel said Rear Admiral Tangsiri plays an important role in Iran’s efforts to build naval doctrine, which emphasizes the strategy of controlling the Strait of Hormuz. He also seems to be responsible for projects developing unmanned equipment for maritime combat operations.

Iran announced last week that “non-hostile ships” can pass through Hormuz if they coordinate with Tehran and comply with announced security regulations. Vessels linked to the United States and Israel, as well as other parties involved in the conflict, are not allowed to travel freely through the waterway.

IRGC also turned the strait into a checkpoint. Ships that want to pass through must submit detailed cargo information, crew lists and destinations to intermediaries licensed by this force, then receive a pass code and be escorted.

At least two ships paid, reportedly $2 million each time they crossed the Strait of Hormuz and paid in yuan, to receive this privilege. Iran’s parliament is seeking to legalize the deal to turn it into a potential source of revenue.
