Trump renews criticism of birthright citizenship

US President Donald Trump once again criticized the American judicial system this Monday (30), focusing on the migration issue, which is one of the main themes addressed by his government in this second term.

The White House leader said other countries are enriching themselves by selling citizenship to the US, as his government tries to curb the entry of foreigners into the country.

“The world is getting rich by selling citizenship to our country, while laughing at the stupidity of our American judicial system (TARIFFS!). Dumb judges and magistrates will not make a great country!”, he stated on the social network.

Trump signed an executive order in the first days of his term to veto the granting of American citizenship to children born to parents who are in the country illegally or who are not citizens or permanent residents.

The measure directs federal agencies not to issue or accept documents recognizing U.S. citizenship for children whose parents are in the U.S. temporarily or illegally. The executive order covers babies born more than 30 days after the document’s effective date.

However, the directive quickly became the target of lawsuits in lower courts with its legality being challenged, which prevented the presidential order from coming into force.

This Wednesday (1st), the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the constitutionality of President Trump’s executive order, which will essentially depend on the interpretation of the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment, which says: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction are citizens of the United States and the state in which they reside”.
