Trump says he will know in a week if Qalibaf is a valid Iran interlocutor

The US president, Donald Trump, stated this Monday that he will know in a week if the president of the Iranian Parliament, Mohamed Baqer Qalibaf, is a valid interlocutor to negotiate on behalf of Iran.

“We’re going to know. I’ll tell you in a week or so,” Trump said in statements to ‘The New York Post’ after being asked if Qalibaf is willing to work with the United States.

Qalibaf has been designated as the preferred interlocutor by the United States in recent weeks despite his tough profile in his public statements and his ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Trump has claimed that “there has been a total regime change” as a consequence of the bombings that began on February 28. “The previous ones are no longer there and we are dealing with a new group of people and until now they have been much more reasonable,” he highlighted.

Regarding the new Iranian supreme leader, Moqtaba Khamenei, Trump has stressed that “no one knows anything about him.” “He is very seriously injured,” he added.

Later, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt highlighted that talks with Iran are progressing well, helped by the damage caused to 70 percent of missile, drone and ship production facilities.

“It is no surprise that the remaining elements of the regime are increasingly eager to end the destruction and get to the negotiating table while they still can despite all the public posturing,” he noted. “What they say in public is very different from what they communicate to us in private,” he stressed.

In addition, Leavitt has mentioned the date of April 6 to close an agreement to end the conflict. Iran, he assured, has accepted “certain points” proposed by Washington during private talks held.
