Pedro Sánchez criticizes the silence and ambiguity of some countries in the face of war

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchezcriticizes in a column in ‘Le Monde Diplomatique’ that governments like Russia, Israel o USA are “openly challenging the foundations of the international system”while other countries remain silent or remain ambiguous “instead of defending international law”.

Sánchez considers that “urgent and structural reforms” are needed, such as the reform of the UN Security Council, since “its composition, structure and veto system contradict the very principles on which the multilateral order was built” and a “more democratic, diverse and inclusive” system where the countries of the global south do not continue to be “passive recipients of resources” but become “active agents of their own future, with voice, vote and real influence in multilateral institutions.”

In addition, it advocates strengthening the supervision of “the institutions responsible for global security.” “Concern must change sides. It is time for those who break the rules to be the ones who feel the pressure, and for those who defend them to act with the resolution that the moment demands,” asks the President of the Spanish Government.

“The current crisis must be treated, therefore, not as an inevitable decline of multilateralism, but as a test of our will to renew it. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reform, rather than abandon, the globally shared rules, norms and institutions that make such cooperation possible,” Sánchez ditches.
