A federal court in Washington has issued a ruling prohibiting the administration of US President Donald Trump from continuing work on the construction of a ballroom on the site of the East Wing of the White House. The cost of the work is $400 million.
Judge Richard Leon granted the group’s claim to protect the historic buildings. HE ruled that such a project requires approval by the US Congress. Note that the eastern wing has already been demolished.
The White House said it would appeal the decision. “There’s been a lot of stuff built in the White House over the years that doesn’t require congressional approval,” Trump said.
The construction decree was signed by the president in the summer of 2025. The President argued that the new structure would not encroach on the existing building and would be adjacent but not touching it. The demolition of the East Wing sparked intense public controversy.
