Anti-Semitism as a political tool: the gap between the right and the left

A new in-depth survey initiated by the organization StandWithUs Brazil and conducted by the AtlasIntel Institute among over 1,800 respondents, breaks down modern anti-Semitism in Brazil into its elements – and shows how it has become a tool in the political struggle:

Normalizing the Holocaust comparison: The most shocking statistic indicates that 95% of those identified with the political left in Brazil believe that it is “legitimate” to compare Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians with the actions of the Nazis.

A sharp difference on the right: on the other hand, on the political right there is a higher sensitivity to the issue. About 88.6% of right-wing respondents identified the claim that “supporters of Israel are a threat to democracy” as a clear anti-Semitic narrative.

Old stereotypes, new arena

This reality also confronts the Jews in their professional everyday life: one in four Jewish professionals (25%) reported that they experienced direct discrimination at their workplace based on their identity.

“The data is a resounding warning siren,” said Andre Leist, CEO of StandWithUs Brazil. “When the leadership normalizes comparisons to Nazis – this translates directly into attacks in the streets, schools and workplaces.”

The bottom line

The Jewish community in Brazil, numbering about 120,000 people, finds itself in the firing line of political polarization. In the shadow of the approaching election, the fear is that the anti-Israel discourse will continue to feed open anti-Semitism – and undermine the sense of security of one of the oldest and most influential communities in South America.
