The White House anticipates that Trump and Rutte will discuss the possible departure of the United States from NATO

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt has announced that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, will speak with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, about the possible departure of the United States from the Atlantic Alliance during their meeting in Washington later in the day.

“It is something that the president has commented on and I think he will discuss it in a couple of hours with Secretary General Rutte,” he explained in statements to the press, adding that they hope that the conversation between the two in Washington will be “frank and sincere.”

Leavitt has reiterated that NATO “has turned its back on the American people during the last six weeks”, alluding to the refusal of numerous countries to support Washington in the war unleashed on February 28 against Tehran.

Since the start of the war, the main European powers have refused to participate in the war in Iran, a tension that escalated to a fever pitch after Trump asked for their collaboration in a future naval mission to control the Strait of Hormuz.

“I always knew it was a paper tiger,” said the American president in statements to the British newspaper ‘The Telegraph’ about NATO. Both Spain and Italy have vetoed the use of North American bases in their territory for activities related to the conflict, claiming that they exceed the terms of the treaties.
