On Thursday, the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Israel to stop attacking civilian targets in Lebanon and said that the Austrian members of the UN peacekeeping forces there must be protected. Neutral Austria participates with about 160 soldiers in the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which has 7,500 members. They belong to a unit that performs tasks such as transporting goods and personnel, repairing vehicles, supplying fuel and extinguishing fires.
The ministry expressed extreme concern over the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and the “humanitarian catastrophe with more than a million displaced persons”.
“The protection of the civilian population and the Austrian UNIFIL contingent is our top priority,” the press release stated.
Instead of calling for the US-Iran ceasefire to be extended to Lebanon, the ministry said a way must be found to return to the November 2024 Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire, according to Reuters.
