A Tunisian court approves a three-year prison sentence for Ghannouchi and his son-in-law

On Friday, a Tunisian Court of Appeal upheld a previous ruling sentencing the leader of the Brotherhood’s Ennahda movement to three years in prison in a case where his party illegally received foreign funds.

The official spokesman for the Court of Appeal, Habib Tarkhani, confirmed that the Court of Appeal ruled to “approval of the preliminary ruling convicting both Rashid Ghannouchi and his son-in-law Rafiq Abdel Salam in what is known as the lobbying case.”

In addition to the prison sentences against Ghannouchi and his son-in-law, the court ordered the Ennahdha Party to pay a fine of one million and 170 thousand and 470 dollars.

The preliminary ruling was issued on February 19. Ghannouchi was arrested on April 17, 2023. On May 15 of the same year, he was sentenced to one year in prison after being convicted of “glorifying terrorism” in another case. The sentence was tightened upon appeal in October of the same year, to 15 years. A month.
