Aeroméxico suspends flights to Ecuador

Aeromexico, Mexico’s main airline, will suspend flights to Ecuador from July 1st to December 18th amid the ongoing diplomatic conflict between the two countries, the company confirmed this Monday (27) to EFE.

The company did not specify the details of the temporary cancellation of the route from Mexico City to Quito, but some Ecuadorian media outlets said the procedures were complicated amid the crisis and others cited a drop in the flow of travelers.

Aeroméxico’s announcement was made almost two months after Mexico broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador following the Ecuadorian Police raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, on April 5, to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who was in place since December last year.

Mexico announced the indefinite closure of its Embassy, and Ecuador suspended its consulates in Mexican territory on May 15, which complicated services for travelers from both nations, mainly because Ecuadorians need visas to travel to Mexico.

Last Thursday (22), the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rejected the precautionary measures requested by Mexico after the invasion by the Ecuadorian Police, but recognized that the “inviolability” of the diplomatic headquarters is “absolute”, so that the Mexican government said it was “very pleased” with the decision.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he hoped Mexico’s demand would come to fruition when a final resolution was reached and ruled out dialogue with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa.
