Another murder in Mexico. In the aftermath of the election of the first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, the mayor of Cotija, a city in the western Mexican state of Michoacan, was killed. Yolanda Sanchez Figueroa – who had already been kidnapped by an armed group last year – was shot dead.
Together with the mayor, one of the men in her escort was also killed. According to what was reconstructed by the Mexican newspaper “La Jornada”, Sanchez Figueroa was hit by 19 shots fired by a commando armed with assault rifles. The killers managed to escape, despite the ambush taking place in a street not far from the city center, where there is a strong presence of security forces, since the town hall presidency and the police are located in the area local.
