Palma de Mallorca – Rain, floods, chaos and frustration!

Later, the first planes were able to take off and land again, but the weather was keeping its toll on the staff.

This happened
At around 12.40 p.m. on Tuesday, a severe storm was brewing over the popular holiday island. Heavy rain, thunderstorms and storms plunged the airport into chaos. According to the state weather service AEMET, 43 litres of rain fell from the sky in one hour in some places. The airport was unable to cope with the masses of water: even the terminals were flooded. Water poured through the ceiling by the litre. The entire duty-free area and other shops were flooded.
► The Airport was initially completely closed. Flights were diverted to Barcelona, but also to the neighboring islands of Ibiza and Menorca. The airport was later put into emergency operation. A few departures were able to take place again, also to clear the apron for arrivals.
In the evening, access roads, terminals, runways, parking lots and even parts of the apron were still under water.
The airport operator Aena announced on site: “The operational situation at the airport is very complicated and makes it necessary to impose restrictions on landings and take-offs for safety reasons. Diversions and delays may occur.”
Passengers stranded on planes
As BILD learned, some of the Holidaymakerswho landed in Mallorca on Tuesday in their planes. It was impossible for people to move around on the apron. As a result, crews and passengers had to wait several hours in their planes.
The fire brigade pumped out the loading ramps, apron and terminals under high pressure.
Tuesday was an ordeal for many travelers: around 100 flights to and from Palma were canceled. Flights from the airports of Hamburg, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Dortmund, Cologne, Leipzig/Halle, Munich, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt/Main were among those affected.
Floods also at Ballermann
According to AEMET, the region around the airport was most affected by the storm. But the popular Playa de Palma, near the airport, also went under. Ballermann singer and influencer Marc Eggers documented the Flood on his Instagram profile.
“The water is actually really high here now,” he commented on Tuesday. “You can hardly drive for long here with cars anymore. It’s really crazy!” He added: “I’ve never experienced anything like this before.”
