Meloni closes the G7: "It was a success. Full support for Kiev and agreement on Gaza"

“I am very satisfied, very proud of the work done at the summit, which was a success”. Thus the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, in the final press conference of the G7 summit. “Italy – she added – has been at the center of the world, it is a great responsibility, but I am proud of how our nation has managed to amaze and chart the course”.

Meloni recalled the main themes addressed by the leaders in the summit, starting from Africa: “I am very satisfied – she stated – that the G7 shared Italy’s approach. The G7 decides to join efforts for a new model of development for African nations, based on partnerships between equals”. Furthermore, “unlike what some hoped or predicted”, the G7 “strengthened support for Ukraine, with a far from obvious agreement” to use the profits of Russian assets blocked in the West in favor of Kiev, he underlined Melons. On the Middle East, the G7 showed “full support for the precious United States plan” for a truce between Hamas and Israel, the prime minister continued, highlighting the summit’s support for a two-state solution to the conflict and the need for a joint commitment to bring humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza.

Another important chapter was that of artificial intelligence, which was discussed in a session with the participation of Pope Francis, the first ever participation of a Pontiff in the work of the Group: “The debate on artificial intelligence does not end here : we will organize other initiatives. It is a topic on which the whole world is wondering and it is essential to address it at an international level”, clarified Meloni, observing that “we must not treat this matter as if it were all white or all black: the tools are neutral, they are neither good nor bad in themselves. Artificial Intelligence brings with it opportunities and risks, it is a multiplier, what do we want to multiply?”.

Answering journalists’ questions, Meloni explained that the word ‘abortò non And was written in the final summit declaration “simply becauseAnd when there are things alreadyhas given as acquired, a reference is made to the previous document. I believe it was an artificially constructed controversy, a controversy that was not And never existed in the summit”, he added. “I understand the reasons why these controversies arise, I understand whyAnd they are fueled by some but objectively it was not a topic except in our area And been the subject of this discussion,” he then cut short.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister pointed out, “the Italian government has not taken any step back on abortion nor on the rights of LGBT people, so the expectations of some have been disappointed, because the story that had been told” about the government and the majority on these issues “did not correspond to the truth”.

At the G7, Meloni continued, “for the first time there was talk of governing migratory flows, of addressing the root causes of migration to guarantee the first right: the right not to emigrate. We have also made commitments on the other side of the coin, that of the fight against human traffickers. We agreed that a global coalition against traffickers is needed by systematising efforts against a new form of slavery. We have brought a model of two great Italians, Falcone and Borsellino. Falcone said ‘follow the money’: I am convinced that striking at the heart of criminal organizations by following the proceeds can make the difference”.

At the end of the press conference Meloni also expressed his gratitude to Puglia, which welcomed the summit in the Borgo Egnazia structure, in the municipality of Fasano: “This wonderful land is even more recognised, appreciated, known and loved on a global level, as It deserves to be. I would say that it was a team effort that honors Italy as a whole. Our country has demonstrated its ability to organize events of this extraordinary importance, a source of pride for all the Italian people : we often forget what we are capable of.”
