Kenyan President William Ruto has said he refused to sign the controversial tax hike bill that sparked protests yesterday that left at least 23 dead and led to the, assault on parliament by the protesters.
“I give up. I will not sign the Finance Bill 2024. It will be completely withdrawn,” Ruto said at a press conference at State House, the presidential headquarters in Nairobi. In this way, the bill will not be able to enter into force after the National Assembly (lower house of Parliament), where the government coalition has the majority, approved it yesterday with 195 votes in favor and 106 against.
