Washington continues to make diplomatic efforts to solve a number of existing problems in the region, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said at a briefing, commenting on the visit of US Deputy Secretary of State James O’Brien to Baku.

“This is a process that we have been working on for some time,” Miller said, stressing that the assistant secretary of state regularly visits the region.

The State Department announced yesterday that James O’Brien will visit Azerbaijan and Croatia on June 27-29. In Baku, O’Brien will meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.

On June 11, O’Brien was in Yerevan, where he was the co-chairman of the American side at the US-Armenia strategic dialogue session. In an interview with Azatut, the high-ranking American diplomat emphasized that it is time for Armenia and Azerbaijan to reach an agreement on a peace treaty, and that the practice of making demands and conducting additional negotiations should be stopped.

And in May, against the backdrop of thousands of protests against the adoption of the controversial law on “foreign agents” authored by the ruling power in Georgia, the United States Deputy Secretary of State arrived in Tbilisi.
