Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, said on Tuesday, July 2, that it had lifted the ban on the use of the Arabic word “shahid” as long as the author of the post does not violate other community rules.
Until today, posts containing the word “shahid” were completely removed from Meta social networks, as it was believed that it denoted individuals referred to in the rules on dangerous and extremist organizations.
In a statement, Meta said the changes to the rules were made on the recommendation of the Supervisory Board, as the word “shahid” has several meanings, most of which connote approval of violence.
