UK general election: Conservatives set for rout, polls show

The UK is holding parliamentary elections on July 4. According to all polls, the Labour Party, which has been in opposition for the past 14 years, will win. Their leader, Keir Starmer, will become the next head of the UK government.

The British are set to elect 650 members of the House of Commons. Voting is available at 40,000 polling stations located not only in schools, churches and community centres, but also in pubs. Exit polls will be published at 10pm local time – after the polls close.

The latest polls before the election predict a historic victory for Labour, with around 430 seats predicted. That’s more than Tony Blair’s 418 in 1997. The Conservatives, who currently have 365 seats, will be left with a maximum of 127.

The Conservative Party’s defeat will be due to the economic crisis, largely caused by Britain’s exit from the European Union, as well as the general lack of clarity in policy and inability to make decisions. The current head of government, Rishi Sunak, failed the election campaign.

Labour is riding to power on a message of national revival. Starmer has already shown he can run a tough line, purging the party of the anti-Semitism that flourished under his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn. He also backed Israel after the Hamas attack on 7 October.
