The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Turkish ambassador following the actions of Merih Demiral, the defender of the Turkish national football team, showing the “Grey Wolves” gesture during the match with Austria in the framework of the European Championship. This is reported by Reuters, citing the German Foreign Ministry.

UEFA has launched an investigation against Demiral. When it will be finished is not known. German interior minister Nancy Feiser and human rights organizations have condemned the noisy gesture of the Turkish football player. Fezer, in particular, warned that “symbols of Turkish right-wing extremists have no place in stadiums” and said that “using the European football championship as a platform for racism is completely unacceptable.”

After Fazer’s announcement, the German ambassador to Turkey was summoned to the country’s Foreign Ministry.
