Labour wins UK election, Keir Starmer to become next PM

Parliamentary elections were held in the UK on July 4. On the morning of July 5, it was announced that the Labour Party had overcome the 326-seat threshold needed for a parliamentary majority, and Labour leader Keir Starmer would become the next Prime Minister.

Current British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak admitted defeat and congratulated Starmer on his victory.

In turn, Keir Starmer declared the UK’s readiness for change.

The Conservative Party’s defeat was caused by the economic crisis, largely caused by Britain’s exit from the European Union, as well as the general lack of clarity in policy and the inability to make decisions. The current head of government, Rishi Sunak, failed in his election campaign.

Labour came to power on a platform of national revival. Starmer has already shown he can run a tough line, purging the party of the anti-Semitism that flourished under his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn. He also supported Israel after the Hamas attack on 7 October. Keir Starmer’s wife, Victoria Alexander, grew up in a Jewish family whose parents were originally from Poland; her mother also converted to Judaism. Some of her relatives live in Israel. Keir Starmer calls himself an atheist, but he and his wife and children attend a liberal Jewish synagogue.
