Sunak resigns as Conservative Party leader after election defeat

Rishi Sunak announced on Friday his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party, apologizing to the public after the electoral defeat he suffered in the British legislative elections and the return of Labor to power.

“I’m sorry,” he said before leaving Downing Street, before heading to meet King Charles III to tender his resignation. “I have received your anger and disappointment and I take responsibility,” he said, adding that the Conservative Party would try to rebuild itself after the disastrous result.

Earlier, the office of outgoing British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement on Friday that Sunak would make a statement at Downing Street at around 09:30 GMT before meeting King Charles to formally resign after the opposition Labour Party won a landslide election victory.

The statement said that newly elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer will meet King Charles at Buckingham Palace, before giving a speech in Downing Street at around 11:20 GMT.
