Norway donates six F-16s to Ukraine

The Norwegian government said in a statement on Wednesday that it will donate six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, as NATO leaders attend the alliance’s annual summit in Washington.

NATO member states are preparing to unveil new aid to Ukraine to help it fend off the Russian invasion that began in February 2022. Hoping to turn the tide of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants the 32-member alliance to send more weapons, money and security guarantees.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said deliveries of F-16 jets from Norway to Ukraine were due to begin this year. A senior NATO official said this week that Ukraine had not yet managed to muster the weapons, ammunition and soldiers it needed for military operations.
