In Georgia, they are going to apply to the Supreme Court to challenge the constitutionality of the “Foreign Agents” law

The President of Georgia, the opposition MPs, human rights defender, non-governmental organizations, mass media are going to apply to the Constitutional Court to challenge the compliance of the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence with the Constitution.

According to press publications, President Salome Zurabishvili demands first to suspend the operation of the law and then to cancel it.

In a conversation with journalists, Ombudsman Levan Ioseliani said that he will be somehow involved in applying to the Constitutional Court and their position is known.

“We called not to reject that law, we called to achieve that goal by making changes in other laws, but the decision (to adopt the law) was accepted,” said the human rights defender of Georgia.

Despite many admonitions and warnings from Western partners, internal uprisings and thousands of demonstrations, the controversial law “On Foreign Agents” was adopted in Georgia and entered into force on June 4. In 3 months, all organizations receiving funding from outside are required to register on a special portal.

Against this background, Brussels announced that it has decided to freeze the process of Georgia’s accession to the EU, as well as to suspend the allocation of 30 million euros intended for the Ministry of Defense of Georgia.

Before that, the US had canceled the annual Georgian-American military exercises, declaring that the decision was due to “false accusations against the United States and other Western structures”.
