Ukraine establishes military government on Russian territory

Commander Syrsky announced that the Ukrainian army has established military administration in the area it controls in Russia’s Kursk province.

Ukraine has established its first military administration in the controlled areas of Kursk region, Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrsky said today. The administration is headed by General Eduard Moskaliov, a former commander of the joint forces.

According to Mr. Syrsky, Ukrainian forces have advanced about 500-1,500 meters into Russian territory in the past 24 hours. Since the beginning of the operation, Ukrainian units have advanced 35 kilometers, taking control of 82 villages and 1,150 square kilometers of territory in the Kursk region.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the information. The agency today gave its first update on the progress of dealing with Ukrainian forces in Kursk, declaring that Russian forces had “completely destroyed the enemy and regained control over the village of Krupets.”

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian forces deployed fighter jets, artillery and UAVs to “prevent the enemy’s latest attacks”, including using mobile groups to penetrate deeper into the country’s territory.

Ukrainian forces crossed the Russian border with tanks and armored vehicles on the morning of August 6, marking the largest incursion since the conflict between the two countries broke out in late February 2022. Russian authorities have declared a federal state of emergency in Kursk and Belgorod, two regions bordering Ukraine. Russia has also imposed an “anti-terrorist” regime in Kursk, Belgorod and another border region, Bryansk.

Russia will deploy additional defense forces in the Belgorod border region, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov announced today.

Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier accused Ukraine of “indiscriminate attacks on civilians”, adding that Kiev would be met with an appropriate response. He said Ukraine launched the operation to improve its position in case of future negotiations, as well as to slow down Moscow’s advance on the front line.
