Biden says Gaza truce deal ‘closer than ever’

US President Joe Biden has said a deal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is “closer than ever” after talks concluded over the past two days in Doha, Qatar.

“We are closer than ever. I don’t want to jinx anything, but as my grandfather used to say: ‘With the grace of God, the good will of the neighbours and a lot of luck, it is possible that we will have something’. But we are not there yet,” he said in statements to the press.

Biden, who spoke on Friday by phone with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al Zani, and the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al Sisi, stressed that the mediators are “much closer to reaching an agreement than they were three days ago.

This last day of talks has been characterized by the presentation of a new “proposal” that would be “consistent with the principles established” by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, in his plan presented at the end of May, and with resolution 2735 of the UN Security Council.
