Greta Thunberg and other climate activists want to block Equinor’s Norwegian factory

Climate activists, including Sweden’s Greta Thunberg and members of the action group Extinction Rebellion, attempted to block a factory of Norwegian energy giant Equinor on Saturday, the activists themselves said.

The action took place in Karsto, in southwestern Norway. The gas and oil processing plant that is operated there is, according to Equinor, the largest of its kind in Europe. There are about thirty gas and oil fields connected to the complex.

In a message circulated on social media, Extinction Rebellion said eight kayaks and three motorboats entered the security zone around the plant to “prevent the normal operation of the tankers”.

Other activists, including Greta Thunberg, have gathered on the land to block the gates to the plant. “We cannot stand by and watch as the fossil fuel industry robs people of their lives and destabilizes our living systems,” Thunberg said in the statement.

A company spokesperson confirmed the protest was taking place, but said the factory’s operations were not being affected. Police were on site.
