Macron comments on accusations of lack of freedom of speech in France in connection with Durov’s arrest

The French President commented on accusations against France of a lack of freedom of speech in connection with the arrest of the founder of the Telegram messenger Pavel Durov in his X-blog.

“I have seen a lot of false information about France here after Durov’s arrest,” Emmanuel Macron began his message with these words, and continued: “France is more committed than ever to freedom of speech and communication, innovation and entrepreneurship. And it will continue to be so,” he wrote.

Macron wrote that under the rule of law in real life and social networks, freedoms are realized within the framework established by law. Enforcement of the law is entrusted to the courts, which have complete independence.

Emmanuel Macron stressed that the decision to detain Pavel Durov is not political. “The arrest of the head of Telegram in France was made as part of an ongoing investigation. This is in no way a political decision. It is up to the judges to make a decision on this case.”
