France: French radical left seeks support for Emmanuel Macron’s impeachment process

The radical left party France Insoumise (LFI) presented this Saturday a proposal to remove the president, Emmanuel Macronwhom he accuses of “serious misconduct” to his “duty“for his refusal to appoint a coalition prime minister New Popular Front (NFP).

The procedure for removing the head of state, governed by Article 68 of the Constitution, is long and difficult to complete, as it would require the approval of two-thirds of the parliamentarians meeting in a High Court. Which is a challenge when a good part of the left was reluctant to support him.

The Assembly, like the Senate, can and must defend democracy against the authoritarian temptation of the President of the Republic, which we do not know where it will end.“, indicated the deputies of LFI in its resolution proposal, which, according to the group leader, Mathilde Panot was “sent to parliamentarians”.

Your text considers that the rejection of Emmanuel Macron to name Lucie Castets after consulting the different political forces, “It is a serious breach of the duty to respect the will expressed by universal suffrage.”, and argues that the left-wing alliance led the last legislative elections (193 seats).

The role of the President of the Republic according to the Constitution is not to make political negotiations in the National Assembly. Article 8 of the Constitution does not provide that the President +selects a Prime Minister of his choice+. It simply provides that the President of the Republic +appoints the Prime Minister+“, added the LFI deputies.

Considering after the interviews with the political parties that a government NFP would be immediately censured by the other groups in the Assembly, Emmanuel Macron dismissed the Castets lead, in the name of the “institutional stability”.
