Egyptian President Begins Visit to Turkey

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi arrived in Ankara on a visit. He was met at the capital’s airport by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The visit is intended to symbolize the full normalization of relations between regional powers.

Turkey and Egypt severed diplomatic relations in 2013, following the overthrow of Islamist Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi with the active participation of al-Sisi. At the same time, trade and economic relations were maintained.

In 2021, Cairo and Ankara began to get closer, with al-Sisi and Erdogan meeting several times at international forums. In February 2024, Erdogan visited Cairo. They discussed cooperation in the defense sector and increasing trade volume to $15 billion.
