Egypt’s Supreme Court has sentenced a man found guilty of raping and murdering a 10-month-old Sudanese girl to death. The verdict has been submitted to the country’s grand mufti for approval.
The attacker attacked little Janet while she was playing with her sister in front of their home in Nasr City, an eastern Cairo neighborhood. He ran with the girl to a park and abused her, then strangled her when she started screaming.
The man was found guilty of kidnapping, raping and murdering the baby. Janet’s family issued a statement expressing satisfaction with the ruling.
The case has generated considerable public interest, in particular by drawing attention to the plight of refugees from Sudan who have found refuge in Egypt.
