Muslim Teen’s Murder of Hindu Classmate Sparks Violence in India

The murder of a Hindu classmate by a Muslim teenager at a school in the Indian city of Udaipur has sparked a wave of religiously motivated violence, with right-wing Hindu groups setting cars on fire and chanting anti-Muslim slogans, prompting a curfew and internet shutdown in the state, the BBC reports.

The killer and the victim were both 15. Rajasthan police deny that the incident was religiously motivated, insisting that the students had argued over notebooks before one pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed the other.

The schoolboy accused of murder was taken into custody, his father was arrested on charges of incitement to murder, and the family’s home was destroyed.
