Not many tourists can reach this secret city
Far up in the Tibetan mountains lies one of the most remote cities in the world that most tourists will never reach. The city of Medog, which sits in the province of the same name in Chinese Tibet, currently has only one way to reach it, after one of the two access roads was closed due to an avalanche. The road to the city takes about four hours, and the simple road built in the 1970s is regularly blocked by extreme weather conditions, leading to its closure eight months of the year. The journey to Madug requires traveling through high mountains and was previously considered a deadly route due to the avalanches and frequent landslides during the rainy seasons. If that’s not enough, Madug also has an interesting policy called “even, odd”. According to this policy, traffic can only enter the city on even dates. And vice versa, traffic can only leave the city on odd dates.

But despite the long journey, and some would say quite arduous, those who come to Madug will discover one of Tibet’s best kept secrets. The city, whose name aptly translates to “Hidden Lotus”, lies near the eastern Himalayas and boasts stunning scenery, a rich cultural heritage and an ancient mystique due to being one of the last cities in Tibet connected by road.

without human contact

Madug’s appeal lies not only in its beauty but also in its remote location, which has preserved the landscapes around it as they were thousands of years ago, protected from development and damage. One of Madug’s most prominent features is the majestic Yarlung Tsangpo River, which winds around the 7,782-meter Namcha Barwa peak. As the river meanders through Madug’s territory, it carves a deep channel that resembles a sharp sword, creating a mesmerizing sight similar to the Milky Way spilling out to sea.

The canyon formed by the Yarlong Tsengpu River extends from the village of Dado Kar in Milin District at an altitude of 2,880 meters in the north to the village of Baxika in Motuo District at an altitude of 115 meters in the south. The canyon stretches for 504.6 kilometers, with an average depth of 2,268 meters and a maximum depth of 6,009 meters. With an average height of over 3,000 meters, it holds the title of the largest mall in the world. The entire area is characterized by a difficult environment for walking, with glaciers, cliffs, steep slopes, mudslides and the raging river. Because of this, many areas as mentioned remain untouched by man, making it one of the few areas in the world that have not yet been explored in depth.

Some of the main waterfalls inside the canyon have a drop height ranging from 30 to 50 meters. The mall includes nine distinct natural areas, ranging from high mountain snow areas to tropical rainforests. This diversity creates a diverse habitat, including two-thirds of known higher plant species in the Qinghai-Tibet Plain, half of China’s mammal species, four-fifths of insect species, and three-fifths of large mushroom species.

Madug, and the Madug district where it resides, is not for the faint of heart. The journey there is challenging, and services may be limited. However, for those looking for a truly unique and unforgettable experience, Madug offers a world of wonder waiting to be discovered.

The journey to Madug: a bureaucratic challenge

Due to its remote location and sensitive border areas, Madug has strict restrictions on tourists. Visitors should obtain a travel permit from the relevant authorities before visiting. This process may take several weeks or months, so it is essential to plan ahead.

A local guide can provide valuable insights into the history, culture and natural wonders of the area. It can also help navigate the challenging terrain and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Also, most of the residents in the area do not speak English, so the assistance of a guide in communicating with the locals can be extremely important.
