Turkey Delivery by Air in Alaska: A Beautiful Story from a Remote World

Anyone who has roasted, carved and eaten a goose or turkey at Christmas in this country will probably have bought it in the supermarket, from a trusted butcher or straight from the farm; From where the animal, which hopefully had a nice life under the sun, made one last car or cargo bike journey to its destination in the oven or casserole.

But there are areas of the world that are not so well equipped with roads and cycle paths and where the winters are still real winters, with meters of snow and icy temperatures below zero. Alaska, for example. People there live so far away and in such small hamlets that there are neither supermarkets nor butcher shops – and certainly no food delivery service.

But the people here also have a right to a holiday bird, thought Esther Sanderlin-Keim, who herself grew up in such a deserted area. Without further ado, she loaded a small propeller plane full of frozen turkeys. A pilot headed for the scattered wooden houses, flew low, and Esther Sanderlin-Keim, dressed in a fashionable camouflage overall with a fur hood, threw the turkeys out into the snow, where enthusiastic families were already waiting for them.

As far as we know, no roofs were smashed during the last flight of the giant birds, which were frozen solid as rocks, and no people or farm dogs were harmed. The “Alaska Turkey Bomb” happened on Thanksgiving, as the editorial network Germany (RND) reported; However, Ms. Sanderlin-Keim can imagine expanding the campaign to other festivals and also dropping off things like cuddly toys, ice cream or chewing gum, provided she finds enough pilots and fellow turkeys. As a child, she was treated to turkey and chewing gum from a friend on a remote farm with her parents out of the air. And she remembers it so fondly that she is now thinking about starting a nonprofit organization and supplying larger parts of Alaska with necessary items.

If that isn’t a nice story in this world overcrowded with bad stories. And if there are no imitators! Applied to our latitudes, which suffer less from snow and ice, but from traffic-clogged streets, this opens up completely new possibilities, especially before the big New Year’s Eve feast: Raclette and fondue sets could be dropped off in the towns along the constantly congested A 8. In Italy, small planes could rain cotechino, stuffed pork sausage, which is eaten here with lentils at the turn of the year; Panettone right after! And dumpling and schnitzel bombers would fly over the Tyrolean towns and ski areas for those winter sports enthusiasts who can no longer afford lunch because of the high ski pass prices. Waving children in the fields and on the edges of the slopes would thank the pilots. And the world would be a little bit back in order
