Phu Quoc still attracts tourists despite a widespread power outage

Visitors can choose outdoor activities, experience the sea and explore local life amid power outages in some areas of Phu Quoc.

Since November 29, the 110 kV underground cable incident on the Ha Tien – Phu Quoc route caused widespread power outages in many areas such as Duong Dong, Cua Can, Cua Duong, Ham Ninh and the entire North Island. However, many attractions and services still operate stably thanks to backup generators.

Thanh Binh, a tour guide in Phu Quoc, suggests tourists choose outdoor activities, experience the sea and explore local life – activities that are not affected by local electricity problems.

Participate in beach tours and outdoor activities

According to tour guide Nam, marine activities are little affected by electrical incidents. Bai Sao, Bai Kem, Bai Truong have stable customers thanks to their natural landscape and simple service chain that does not require high electricity. Tourists mainly swim, take photos, play water sports such as SUP, kayak or dive to see coastal coral.

At picnic spots such as Tranh Stream and Da Ban Stream, tourists enjoy trekking, soaking in spring water and picnicking in the forest. Most sales services use gas stoves and rechargeable lights. Groups of family and young guests choose the morning to avoid the harsh sun, Mr. Binh said.

Meanwhile, Ham Ninh fishing village and coastal seafood restaurants are still bustling with customers. Fishermen said that preparation, grilling, and steaming activities all use traditional stoves.

According to the tour guide, sunset viewing spots such as Sunset Sanato, Ong Lang beach and Dinh Cau Cape are crowded in the afternoon. Tourists walk, enjoy drinks, and take photos in groups.

Canoe tour companies said that coral diving activities at Hon Mong Tay, Hon May Rut, Hon Gam Ghi and Hon Thom are still taking place on schedule. Canoes use their own fuel, not dependent on shore power. The tour usually includes diving to see coral, fishing, and lunch on the boat. Some cruise ships are equipped with ice and gas stoves to serve guests.

Kayaks and SUPs at Cua Can, Ong Lang beach are suitable choices for young groups.

Experience local culture and life

According to the tour guide, Phu Quoc night market is still open every night. The booths use flashlights, rechargeable lights or small generators for lighting. Visitors can stroll around Duong Dong night market, explore local cuisine with rich seafood, grilled foods, and diverse snacks such as coconut ice cream, Thai rolled ice cream, and flavored roasted peanuts. Phu Quoc Night Market is located at the intersection of Bach Dang – Nguyen Dinh Chieu streets. The market operates from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Pepper farms, honey production facilities, and myrtle gardens in Cua Duong and Ganh Dau continue to welcome visitors thanks to the outdoor tour model. Tourists learn about the pepper growing process, try honey, and buy specialty myrtle wine. These operations do not use complex electrical equipment.

The fish sauce barrel house – one of the famous specialties is also an option for tourists to visit. The incubation area and warehouse mainly use natural light. Visitors can listen to an introduction to the anchovy fermentation process and choose to buy gifts to take home.

Choose sights with backup systems

Phu Quoc Prison – an important historical attraction of the island still welcomes visitors normally thanks to the backup generator system ensuring stable operation of the simulation area and display area. According to the tour guide, the number of visitors has not changed much compared to before the electrical incident occurred.

The North Island is the most affected area, but most entertainment spots here have backup generators to serve tourists. Phu Quoc United Center or “city that never sleeps” is the largest entertainment and resort complex on the island with many activities taking place throughout the night. This area brings together shopping centers, food streets, performing arts, bars, night markets and vibrant walking spaces. Thanks to operating under the “one destination – all experiences” model, visitors can have fun, eat, watch shows or participate in festivals at any time of the day without worrying about lack of options.

Many large resorts in the North Island also invested in high-capacity generators in advance, so swimming pools, restaurants and spas are still open normally. Visitors spend more time on campus enjoying resort services instead of traveling long distances.

Note

Tour guide Thanh Binh said tourists should prioritize exploring the South of Phu Quoc Island during this time. The area is less affected by power outages, many outdoor attractions, beaches and large resorts have backup generator systems, helping the resort, entertainment and culinary experience go smoothly.

Travel agencies in Phu Quoc recommend that tourists prepare spare batteries. When booking, you should ask in advance about a backup power system to ensure your experience.
