The city owns the world’s largest Santa Claus

Built in 2015, the model impresses with its height equivalent to a 7-story building, about 10 meters wide, visible from many locations in the city. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the work was officially recognized as the largest in the world on December 12, 2016.

The project was funded by the Águeda City Council, worth about 49,000 Euros. This is currently a must-see tourist icon and the most photographed location in the local Christmas event series.

The idea to create the world’s largest Santa came from a desire to make a difference for Águeda and is part of a larger project to promote tourism and local culture.

“Santa Claus is not just a mere attraction. This is a symbol of the creativity and energy that the city of Águeda puts into every activity,” said Mayor Jorge Almeida.

He also affirmed that the city government will continue to invest in similar initiatives to promote trade, tourism as well as strengthen community cohesion.

In addition to the above major record, visitors to the Águeda Tourism Office can also admire the world’s smallest Santa Claus, a nano-sculpture by British artist Willard Wigan, located in a pinhole that can only be seen through a microscope.

The image of white umbrellas filled with light, which is the symbol of the city of Águeda (Aveiro region), also reappears to welcome Christmas this year. The umbrella street area was once voted by CNN Travel as one of the most beautiful Christmas streets in the world.
